Organizing Your Home Office
Your home office needs to be your place of zen. You need to allow yourself to have a fresh start in your brain every time you enter and start your work. This can be easier said than done, especially when your workstation is disorganized and inefficient. A lot of the things that you think might help you, might actually get in your way! That’s why it’s good to dive deep and organize your home office every once in a while. It’s especially important when selling. More clutter means that the potential buyer will have more difficulty imagining themselves working in the space. From pesky monitors to piles of paper, lets go through the best techniques to organize your office and and make it an efficient working machine!
Out with the Old
Just take a good look at your office and assess what you have had for quite some time. From pesky monitors, to old computers, it’s time for them to go! You might be asking why? Well, old monitors don’t have the technology that new ones have and are also bad on the eyes. You need a clear view when working on your projects and an old monitor might not do that for you. As far as old computers go, they might be running your software too slow. Slow software means a wandering mind! Before you know it, you are thinking about your favorite sports team while your computer is loading. Obviously, you are starting to get out of the mindset of working. This will cost you time and money in the long run. Time to be efficient. Make sure to properly get rid of your technology. If the monitors or computers are still working, consider donating. You can even sell the old computers and monitors if you want some extra cash.
Piles of Paper
If you don’t have a paper shredder for your office, it’s probably time to get one when you have piles of paper around. In most cases, they pile up because you don’t want to throw away the paper due to sensitive information. It could also mean that you have nowhere to organize the papers so a filing cabinet might be the answer to your problems. No matter the case, a cluttered office is a cluttered mind. Last thing you need is to get stressed out from not knowing what to do with all these papers. When staging your office, the piles of paper should be the first to go!
Get an Assistant
No, not an actual person – a smart assistant like Amazon’s alexa, Google assistant, or Apple’s Siri. They all have little machines that you can place right on your desk and will work hand in hand with your phone. This makes for a great way to organize information or tasks. You can turn on the lights, place some music, give someone a call, and have your questions answered all without having to take your fingers off of the keyboard. You would be surprised how often you get lost and distracted looking up the weather on your computer. That’s why it’s important to have it be told to you and get right back to working.
Junk Drawer & Corners
We all have a junk drawer. Some of us may even have two or three. It’s time to get it organized correctly. It might seem like a really small task, but have you ever had to pull out multiple things in your junk drawer just to find something specific? It sure can take up a lot of time pulling everything out and putting it back in, only to just mix up everything all over again. Get yourself a tray, or even a silverware holder to put in your drawer. Put your pens, pencils, and markers in accordingly and whatever other tools you end up using. This little time to organize will save you a lot of time in the future. Additionally, if your office has in-unit shelving, potential home buyers will definitely open and close the cabinets and drawers. We’d hate for them to have their hands in your junk drawer just to be able to close it properly.
Just like junk drawers, corners of an office usually become the dedicated space for the junk you don’t use often or don’t have a place for. Time to get rid of it! If you can’t depart, find a shelving unit that can neatly organize all of the items thrown off to the side.

Now it’s time to slowly watch as you improve and organize your office. You will notice your productivity go through the roof! Not only that, but you will start wanting to show everyone your office. It starts to become more of an accomplishment and somewhere you want to be a lot of the time. After organizing, you can start to look at upgrading more parts of the office. If you organize now, when it comes time to selling your home, you won’t have to go through the extra leg work of staging your home.
